The Merlin Hotel, developed by Del Webb International, was officially opened in November 1971. The hotel project also included a 35-storey tower block, which was completed in 1973. The property was acquired by Hotel Plaza Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of United Overseas Land, in the early 1980s. The tower block was subsequently converted to service apartments and the hotel was renamed the Plaza Hotel in November 1982 to avoid confusion with the President Merlin Hotel at Kitchener Road. Following Hotel Plaza’s acquisition of the Parkroyal brand in Asia, it was relaunched as the Plaza Parkroyal Hotel in 2002 after refurbishment works.
