Built in 1970, the Metropole Hotel was officially opened by the President of the Kiung Chow Hwee Kuan (the main Hainanese clan association), Mr. Wee Tin Teck, on 13 January 1971. At the time of its opening, it was described as an establishment with the “amenities of a first class hotel” but at moderate rates. Reinventing itself as a conference venue for small businesses, the hotel underwent major refurbishment works in 1992 and added a banquet room on its second floor, which could also be converted for use as a seminar room. The hotel was sold to Hind Development in 2006 and a new boutique hotel, the Naumi, was launched on the site in September 2007.
