Situated along the banks of the Singapore River, the Hotel New Otani was officially opened in October 1984. Managed by the Japanese hotel group of the same name, the hotel was part of a cluster development project which also included an apartment complex and a shopping centre named Liang Court. The Daimaru department store from Osaka was the anchor tenant of the shopping mall until Japanese food group, Meidi-Ya & Co., took over its premises in 2003. The French hotel group, Accor, took over management of the hotel in December 2004 and it was renamed the Novotel Clarke Quay.
