Pair of cups and saucers

This set of cups and saucers have panelled decoration with gilded borders. The design consists of floral sprays alternating with a couple in a garden setting. This is an example of Chinese porcelain in the style of reproduction German Meissen ware. The base of the saucers have a painted monogram ‘AR’ (Augustus Rex) that was used on Meissen porcelain between 1723 and 1736.The pair of cups and saucers highlights a period in the history of Chinese porcelain production where potters catered to the tastes of European clients by replicating Western ceramic designs and forms. This trend was especially dominant in the 18th century and Chinese potters copied or adapted the ceramics from manufactories such as Sevres, Delft and Meissen.
