This cowry shell-shaped box is unique in form. It was carved from wood and lacquered black on the outside and red on the inside. The simple design is quite unlike most lacquerware from Burma, which has elaborate 'yun' (incised) decoration. It was probably used to hold precious objects or for the presentation of gifts.
