This cloth picture depicts a Jain mandala in yellow on a red ground, with a seated Jina in the lower circle, and the yakshi Padmavati in the upper one. The rest of the space is divided into square panels occupied by deities and guardians dressed in textiles printed with a great variety of patterns, a reflection of the lively trade in Gujarati block-printed textiles across the Indian Ocean. Mantras and seed syllables are inscribed around the two circles. With its linear treatment of form, angular figures which display the painter’s knowledge of dance, and extreme three-quarter profiles, this painting is representative of the Western Indian style. The influence of Persian illumination can be seen in the intricate border ornamentation.
