Peranakan furniture in blackwood with mother-of-pearl inlay was associated with the formal reception hall of the Peranakan home, especially in large ancestral houses of old Peranakan families. In wealthy families a complete set of furniture was usually given to daughters as part of their wedding trousseau. The set would consist of eight chairs, four square tea tables, two side tables such as this example, and two long benches.
