As seen in this photograph, Chinese opera troupes performed on a stage that had been temporarily erected, and the performances would only run for a few days. Commonly known as 'wayang' in Malay, the Chinese street opera was an inexpensive and popular form of entertainment that was available to Chinese immigrants in Singapore during the early days. The wayang is closely associated with religious celebrations and the performing wayang troupes would be hired by the local temple or clan association.
