The Golden Landmark Hotel was opened in November 1988 at the junction of Victoria and Arab Streets. The hotel was developed by businessman Ng Teng Fong’s Far East Organization and was initially called the Far East City Hotel during the construction phase. The hotel was adjoined to the Golden Landmark Complex, which was a Far East project completed a few years earlier to house a jewellery centre, shopping mall and the Bugis Street Food Centre. The architectural style of both projects was a mixture of Arabic, Asian and Western influences to reflect the multicultural character of nearby areas such as Kampong Glam and Chinatown. The 19-storey, 400-room hotel was equipped with modern amenities and provided guests with dining options such as a 24-hour coffeehouse, the Cafe Aladdin and Bugis Lounge, the Rose Garden Thai Restaurant, and the Poolside Bar. In 1995, the hotel was renamed the Golden Landmark Mercure Hotel after the French hotel management group Accor was hired to market the property to business travellers. The hotel underwent another name change in 2009 to become the Landmark Village Hotel. This renaming exercise was part of Far East Organization’s move to group four residences and three hotels—the other two being the Albert Court Village Hotel and Changi Village Hotel—under its new Village Hotels & Residences brand.
