This gold waisted ogival ‘pending’ (belt buckle) is elaborately decorated with floral motifs and a central medallion of an unknown mythical creature. Various metalwork techniques such as repoussé—in which designs are hammered into sheet metal—engraving and chasing were used to fashion this piece. Peranakan Chinese pending comes in a variety of shapes and styles. For instance, unlike this ogival or eye-shaped pending, Aceh-style pending tended to be quatrefoil.
