View of the Hongkong Shanghai Bank

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building was built in 1892 on the site of A.I.Johnston Company's building at Collyer Quay before it was demolished in 1919, to be replaced by a larger, more modern structure in 1925. The bank had been founded in the 1860s in Hong Kong and was known by the Chinese as ‘Wayfoog’ or ‘Abundance of Remittances’.
