This ewer is a good example of a high quality piece elegantly moulded with the durablity associated with bamboo. The Dehua potter’s eye for naturalistic details is seen in the finely modelled bamboo twig handle, plaited knot on the lid and band of bosses or nodes for the roots. The theme of bamboo was associated with integrity, one of the scholarly virtues. The word for bamboo joints is 'jie' and 'qijie' means ‘integrity’.Dehua, located on the southeast coast of Fujian province, is well known for its production of white porcelain, known to Europeans as 'blanc de Chine'. The earliest Dehua porcelain was produced as early as the 14th century but the production and quality of these porcelain peaked around the 17th and 18th centuries.
