Tuan Mong School

This photograph shows Tuan Mong School, established in 1907 in a shophouse at North Bridge Road. It was one of the first ‘new style’ Chinese primary schools opened in the first decade of the 20th century. These new schools differed from 19th-century privately-funded schools, which had no fixed curriculum or student intake. Its curriculum was closely modelled on that of schools in China and included subjects such as music and sport.
