During the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), cinema, radio and newspapers were used to promote Japan’s declared aim to instil Asian consciousness and pride. Cinemas such as the Capitol specialised in showing cultural and educational documentaries at cheap prices. Later, mainstream Japanese films were screened to introduce Japanese culture to the population.
