'Chinese Temple, Singapore'

The Chinese temple depicted here is the Thian Hock Keng temple, where the Chinese gave thanks for enjoying safe travel on the seas. The temple was located at the coastline until 1879, after which reclamation work left it inland.This print (lithograph) was published in Charles Wilkes' 'Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition during the Years 1838-42', vol.v in 1845.
