This advertisement features a lady dressed in western- style clothing, posing in a well furnished home interior. Such posters were an extension of the ‘yuefenpai’, or calendar poster, China’s earliest form of commercial art. The calendar poster originally only showed illustrations of foreign products, before evolving into the ‘beautiful lady’ calendar posters, or ‘meinu yuefenpai’, in which beautiful women took centrestage. Here, the product being advertised can be seen at the bottom of the poster.
