This is a view of Melaka during the Dutch period, with Dutch East India Company vessels in the foreground. The walls of the imposing fortress of Melaka can also be seen on the right-hand side of the print. The fortress was built during the Portuguese occupation of Melaka in the 1500s and became a symbol of European imperial domination over the Straits of Malacca. This print indicates that the fortress was still relatively intact two centuries later, although Melaka was no longer at its prime.
