The Elgin Bridge was first known as Presentment Bridge in 1822. It was later replaced by the Thomson Bridge sometime between 1844 and 1845. Due to increasing traffic, the Thomson Bridge was abolished and in its place was an iron bridge which was constructed between 1862 and 1863 called the Elgin Bridge. It was named after Lord Elgin, the Governor-General of India. This bridge was later demolished in the 1920s to make way for the present Elgin Bridge, which was opened to traffic in 1929.
