This is a water-colour painting of an itinerant hawker at Kampong Ubi. It was a common sight in most villages and in the town. Itinerant hawking gave many people an opportunity to earn a livelihood. It required little capital but generated good income. The movement to legalise and house these itinerant hawkers gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s. By the late 1980s, itinerant hawkers had disappeared from the streets of Singapore.
