This woman’s shoulder cloth or ‘salendang’ features extremely complex gold supplementary weft designs woven over a red silk base. There are alternative bands of red, brown, blue and yellow threads. Such complex designs are typical of Solok. This ‘kain salendang’ includes the ‘salapah’ (box) and ‘bintang’ (star) motifs and is woven in a style typical of Solok. In woven cloth, the warp is the set of lengthwise yarns attached to the loom and the weft is the yarn which is woven back and forth, across the warp, to create the woven fabric.
