This is a painting of how people had to queue for essential food supplies like rice, grains and vegetables. During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, the Japanese controlled food supplies and priority was given to the Japanese soldiers as they needed it to sustain themselves at battle. As a result, the locals were severely deprived of food and water. They were issued ration cards and once they reached their quotas they could not ask for more. Some locals were able to improvise and make their own food. They were able to grow vegetables and make condensed milk which not only benefited them but other locals as well. However there were some who were so desperate and could not withstand the aching pangs of hunger. These people resorted to eating bugs and other insects they found.
