This is a document issued on 7 May 1862 concerning the petition of Edward Augustus Edgerton for admission as a general agent to the Court of Judicature of Prince of Wales' Island, Singapore and Malacca. He was examined by John Simons Atchinson, James Guthrie Davidson, and Thomas Braddell, and was determined to be unsuitable for admission to the Court. This document is part of a collection of legal documents from the 19th and early 20th centuries which provides a glimpse into the work of the notable personalities who left their mark on Singapore’s legal history, and the economic and other transactions undertaken by ordinary immigrants in 19th century Singapore that tell stories of misfortune and indebtedness which would otherwise have disappeared from history.
