Quadrant

This astronomical quadrant, made of lacquered wood and paper, is basically a quarter of an astrolabe. There is a handle in the middle of the quadrant for holding the device. This quadrant is a typical example of those made in Ottoman Turkey, where they were the preferred instruments for keeping time. This piece, marked for latitude 41 degrees, was made for use in Istanbul. There is a handle in the middle of the quadrant for holding the device.
