A range of tiny jewel-like porcelain jars and boxes such as miniaturised ‘kamcheng’ and ‘chupu’ (covered jars) would have been included in an affluent Peranakan Chinese bride’s wedding gifts. These would have been displayed on the bride’s dressing table along with other personal items.This miniature ‘chupu’ may have been used by the Nyonya (Peranakan woman) as a cosmetic container to hold a type of face powder known as 'bedak sejuk' (literally, cooling powder in Malay), made from finely ground rice flour. It may have also been used to store small trinkets.
