Painting of locals learning Japanese in schools

During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, to inculcate the young with Japanese ideals and spread propaganda, the Japanese turned many schools into Japanese Schools like this one. One of the more famous among them was the Syonan Nippon Gakun also known as the Syonan Japanese College in Queen Street. Students were taught how to speak and write in Japanese. They had to sing he Japanese national anthem and bow before the picture of the Emperor before the day began. Parents who refused to send their children to these Japanese schools were given negative sanctions like lesser food rations. On the other hand, those who excelled in the Japanese language were given an extra allowance.
