The idea of establishing a Chinese university in Singapore was first mooted in 1953 by Tan Lark Sye (1897–1972), a prominent businessman, philanthropist and activist for Chinese education. He donated cash and land for the building of Nanyang University from his own funds. Members of the Chinese community from all walks of life came forward to support the construction of the university. This print depicts the solidarity of trishaw riders who had come together to donate their day’s earnings towards Nanyang University.
