Double-sided seal

This is the seal of Tengku Yusoff of Kelantan dated AH 1310-1311/ c.1892–1894 CE. The seal bears the name of Tengku Yusuf, son of Sultan Ahmad of Kelantan (1886-1889), and brother of Sultan Muhammad III (r.1889-1890). One side is dated AH 1310/ 1892-1893 CE and the other, AH 1311/ 1893-1894 CE. This is typical as such seals were often re-used on the reverse side after the end of the year. Both sides feature a circle with a decorative eight-petalled border. The calligraphy on the seal is written in Jawi script. The quality of carving and calligraphy is much better on the 1893-1894 side than the 1892-1893 side. Official seals were used in Malay courts for official correspondence or to endorse legal documents.
