The Cavenagh Bridge is named after the last Governor of the Straits Settlements Major General Orfeur Cavenagh, after which Singapore became a Crown Colony of the British Empire. It is the only suspension bridge in Singapore and the oldest bridge across the Singapore River. It was one of the last projects that was constructed by Indian convict labourers in Singapore. This bridge was designed by Colonel G.C. Collyer, Chief Engineer of the Straits Settlements. A bridge that was formerly able to accommodate carts and horses, it is now a pedastrian bridge.
