The motif on this exhibit displays a strong link to Chinese folklore and legend, a major theme found in Haw Par Villa. Originally called Tiger Balm Gardens, Haw Par Villa was built on Pasir Panjang Road by Aw Boon Haw in 1937. Aw, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, had set up the gardens with the intention of educating the public about Chinese culture and tradition. Aw was also synonymous with Tiger Balm, the renowned product that he and his younger brother, Aw Boon Par, successfully marketed in Singapore and around the region.
