In this artwork, Pakistani artist, Muzzumil Ruheel deconstructs calligraphy as an inquiry into the complexities of social structures and as a means of developing his own visual vocabulary. This series of his artwork is entitled, Alfaaz-Mutazaad (meaning ‘opposite words’), which creates words with no meanings. However, he painstakingly applies the principles of calligraphy and stringent rules of proportion to create beautiful calligraphic lines, curves and 'nukta' (dots). The incorporation of skill with meaningless words is Muzzumil Ruheel’s commentary on the frivolous debates of religious and political leaders in Pakistan. It is also in part inspired by experiences from his early childhood, as his parents belonged to two opposite sects of Islam. He uses 'thulth' script as its monumental grandness is what he feels is an obvious choice for a critique of the superficial.
