The Raffles Hotel was established by the Armenian Sarkies brothers in 1887, designed by the architectural firm Swan and Maclaren. It soon acquired a world-wide reputation. During the Japanese Occupation, top ranking Japanese officers used the hotel as their rsidential quarters.
