This postcard depicts an indigenous woman with her children in late 19th to early 20th century colonial Singapore. The first picture postcards of Singapore were produced in 1897. The way people were depicted in these postcards reflect how the Europeans perceived Singapore from a position of power. Natives were usually depicted smiling, as though they led carefree lives under the colonial system. Nevertheless, these early postcards are valuable documentation of groups of people who have since been lost or assimilated into larger ethnic groups.
