Members of the Blue Cross wore this armband while attending to the needy and removing corpses from the streets. Many of these bodies were those of Indonesian youth who had been brought to Singapore by the Japanese military. These youth were made false promises of proper jobs and good wages, but were given hard labour instead. When they became ill or died from disease, they were abandoned.
