Designed by Swan and Maclaren, Raffles Hotel was established by the Sarkies brothers in 1887. It opened in 1896 and offered patrons the opportunity to indulge in rituals of colonial life such as tea dances and cocktail hours in the ballroom which was equipped with many whirring fans to ensure comfort.
