This poem by Zhu Jizuo (?-1641) describes his observations and feelings as he basks in nature, in a retreat away from the secular world. The vigorous brush strokes reflect Zhu's state of mind and the historical period in which he lived. The 17th century was a time of significant artistic ferment with many creative transformations of received models. This stemmed from the wider social context, which saw great political, social and economic change with much dislocation and disruption. Zhu himself was displeased with the new Manchu conquerors and even rallied troops to rebel against the new Qing regime in 1648.Zhu Jizuo was born in Putian, Fujian province during the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644). He was a scholar official who had served in the Haulin Academy and Ministry of Rites. He was also well-known as a poet and in his later years, as a calligrapher.
