Crouching lion

This muscular sculpture of a crouching lion is finely stylized down to its eyes, mane, moustache, leg fur and paw. It is seen here with three paws on the ground and with his left paw lifted up. The tail is tightly curled up over his hind part with a tuft of hair. A miniature warrior stands close to him. In Hindu temple architecture, lions are used in many places. This sculpture is most likely from above the shukanasa, that portion of the temple entrance that is right below the shikhara (superstructure) and directly above the sanctum.
