This is a paper stencil of a motif that is embroidered on a kebaya, which is a traditional long-sleeved tunic worn by Peranakan women. Kebaya embroidery designs were drawn first on pieces of paper and then copied onto tracing papers. These patterned tracing papers served as stencils as they were usually pinned in place beneath the blouse, and the designs would then be sewn in accordingly. The paper stencils were accumulated by Peranakan women and they became veritable portfolios of sketches and patterns that were passed down over generations.
