Four-armed Chamunda in battle with an army of demons

This painting is of four-armed goddess Chamunda in battle with an army of demons. It is originally a page from the set illustrating the Durga Saptashati, a book of hymns dedicated to Durga and her many battles with demons. Several sets were once painted which are now dispersed. The image of Durga is repeated in each illustration for continuity. Here, Durga is seated unperturbed on a feline vehicle and is watching Chamunda vanquish the demon army. This painting is a typical example of Pahari painting style of north India popularised during the 17th to the 19th centuries. Pahari paintings are characterised by soft contours, keen detailing and impressive perspective.
