Dutch Square, also known as Red Square is an area surrounded by red buildings which were offices of Dutch administration in colonial Malacca.The largest building in Dutch Square is ‘Stadthuys’, or ‘town hall’ in Dutch. It was constructed between 1641 and 1660 as the residence for the Dutch Governor and his deputy.Next to Stadthuys stands the Christ Church, which was built in 1753. It is the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia. Another significant structure in Dutch Square is the Red Clock Tower, which was built in 1886 in honour of the Chinese merchant, Tan Beng Swee.
