Designed by Swan and Maclaren, Raffles Hotel was established by the Sarkies brothers in 1887. The ballroom, depicted here with ceiling fans, was opened to the public in 1920. It offered patrons the opportunity to indulge in rituals of colonial life such as tea dances and cocktail hours in a comfortable and cool setting.
