'Interior of Tremal Naig’s choultry, Madura'

This is an imaginary interior as Tremal Naig’s choultry (resthouse) is an independent mandapa (hall) outside the main temple complex at Madurai. The interior architecture of decorative pillars, capitals, ceilings is rather detailed and captures much of the figures accurately. The painting has a dramatic interior interspersed with massive pillars through which light filters into the mysterious corridor. At the end of the corridor, the sanctum with a lingam (phallic symbol of Shiva) is located while in the foreground, a priest is conducting a ceremony before the statue of Tremal Naig accompanied by his wives and attendants. It seems that both the Daniells worked on this engraving to produce an extremely awe inspiring interior of an equally awesome temple of Meenakshi-Sunadershvara at Madurai, South India.
