This shallow bowl with an everted rim has a greyish glaze and is incised with floral sprays on its inner walls. It is produced at one of the Xicun kilns in present-day Guangdong province, whose wares were exported in large quantities to Southeast Asia. Possibly exported during the Northern Song period (960-1126), this bowl is typical of the early trade wares found in Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines and Indonesia. Chinese ceramics were highly prized in these regions as ceramics of the same quality could not be produced locally.
