This hand-painted aquatint is of the Gopuram of Meenakshi-Sundareshvara Temple, from Madura, South India. The height of the gopuram and the domed structure is accentuated by the distance and the placement of miniature figures in the foreground. Light enters both these paintings from an unknown source although afternoon or dusk is being implied. The stark contrast of light and shade typical of the Indian summer are very efficiently captured in all these paintings. This was drawn and engraved by Thomas Daniell. It seems to belong to a later print set based on the first one produced in London in 1798.
