Skirtcloth

This skirtcloth features floral designs, and was patterned using the ‘warp ikat’ technique, where the vertical threads are tied-and-dyed before the fabric is woven. This skirtcloth was made of three panels sewn together. Such skirtcloth was not worn, but was an exchange item at marriage negotiations. It has been suggested that the more panels a skirtcloth consisted of, the more valuable it was; some had as many as 16 panels.
