This sculpture of an emaciated Buddha represents the penance of Buddha. It is broken but the complete figure would have shown Buddha seated in padmasana, the lotus position, meditating. Buddha renounced the life of a prince and retreated to the forest in search of truth giving up food and all worldly comforts. Here Buddha’s expression in this sculpture is not pitiful but rather full of calm and introspection.
