Damascened Khattwanga, sceptre

This khattwanga or iron scepter symbolizes principles in Tibetan Buddhism which are either to combat evil or to protect the devout laity. This Tibetan khattwanga is created using the casting and gilding technique. It has damascening which is metal inlay using very fine threads of silver. The two heads in gold and copper are surmounted by a skull and a dorje, a small trident that symbolizes power. This whole ensemble is created for ceremonial use by a Lamaistic priest. Usually khattwanga is an attribute of Padmasambhava, (who is believed to have brought Tantric Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century), and yogini Yeshe Tsogyel, his second main consort.
