Lingam box with chain

Ayigalu or lingam boxes are worn by staunch Shiva devotees. This one from Karnataka, South India, in the form of bull horn, is called the chauka (sqaure shape). The surface is smooth save for a repoussé floral pattern on the base. The cover slides off to reveal a small crystal lingam, which is bathed and worshipped everyday by its wearer. A plaited sliver cord is used to fasten the box, which is worn around the neck by the devotee.
