This Qur’an fragment is written in bold maghribi script on parchment and is extensively illuminated. The chapter headings are written in a large gold kufic script and the end of each verse is marked by illuminated roundels. The maghribi script was developed during the Abbasid Empire (750-1258 CE) and labelled 'kufic' after the city of Kufa in Iraq. The script refers to a group of early angular scripts that were used for copying early Qur'ans as well as to inscribe on objects and architecture.
