This is a view of Orchard Road, with Amber Mansions on the left of the photo. The name of the road was probably derived from the many spice and fruit tree plantations found in the area during the 19th century. Owing to the presence of rich European plantation owners and wealthy families moving to its vicinity to escape the crowded town area, Orchard Road became a prime residential district. Built in 1922, Amber Mansions was a premier shopping mall that catered to the affluent classes. It was demolished in 1984 to make way for the Dhoby Ghaut Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station.
