Marriage of Rama and Sita

This is a simple line drawing of the Ramayana hero, Rama, with Sita. It appears to be a single sheet and probably does not belong to any manuscript. This drawing could be a sketch or a study for a bigger painting. Rama and Sita stand on a raised platform in the centre surrounded by court ladies on the right and the ashta dikpala, eight guardians of the directions, riding on their vehicles. Bearded priests oversee the wedding while Janaka the father of Sita, offers holy water, on the clasped hands of the bridal couple, an important ritual called panigrahana in the Hindu wedding ceremony. The ceremony takes place under a tree.
